Hi there everyone! Lydia here. Today, I'll be sharing 4 easy ways in which you can add color to embossing paste.
1. Metallic Ink Sprays
The Metallic Ink Sprays color the paste beautifully and leave a subtle sheen as well. To color your embossing paste, simply add a dollop of Embossing Paste to a non-porous surface (I used the Medium Watercolor Palette), add a spritz of color to the paste (I used 3 sprays), then mix the color into the paste using a palette knife.
I used 3 colors of Metallic Ink Spray (Frosty Pink, Coral Berry, and Ruby Red), to make three colors of paste. When these were done, I added these over Bubble Wrap Stencil.
2. Liquid Watercolor/Watercolor Brush Marker Refills
Liquid Watercolors color the Embossing Paste perfectly! I think this may be my favorite way to color the paste. To color the embossing paste, simply add a dollop of Embossing Paste to a non-porous surface (I used the Medium Watercolor Palette), add a few drops of color to the paste (I used 2 drops), then mix the color into the paste using a palette knife. These are highly pigmented so not much is needed.
I used Turquoise, Lagoon, and Desert Night Liquid Watercolors to create 3 colors of embossing paste. When these were mixed, I added them over Broken Chevrons Stencil.
3. Artist Marker Refills
Altenew's Artist Markers work great to color Embossing Paste perfectly, you can get really vibrant shades. To color embossing paste, simply add a dollop of it to a non-porous surface (I also used the Medium Watercolor Palette here), add a few drops of color to the paste (I used 3 drops), then mix the color into the paste using a palette knife. These are also highly pigmented so not much is needed.
I used Lavender Fields, Deep Iris, and Midnight Violet Artist Marker Refills to create 3 colors of embossing paste. When these were mixed, I added them over On The Plus Side Stencil.
4. Ink Pads
Our Crisp Dye Inks can also color Embossing Paste. I have to say, though, this is the messiest way to do it, but it still looks great! To color embossing paste, simply add a dollop of it to a non-porous surface (Again, I used the Medium Watercolor Palette here), add ink to the palette next to the paste, then mix the color into the paste using a palette knife.
I used Parrot, Olive, and Moss Inks to create 3 colors of embossing paste. When these were mixed, I added them over Chevrons Stencil.
I finished off all the cards simply. I used the Flower Vine Stamp Set to white heat-emboss an image onto vellum. Then, I used the coordinating die to cut it out. The sentiments came from the same set.
To see how these cards came together, please watch the video below. Or over on YouTube:
Thanks so much for stopping by! I hope you were inspired to try these 3 easy ways to color your embossing paste!

I love your blog post and ways to add colour to the paste. Some of those ways are new to me! I love paste and playing with colouring it! Some of my favourite is mica power, as it gives it a shine, or adding sparkle to it with glitter. It has brought back so many ideas and I need to take out my paste again! I have to say though, once I have created a beautiful background I don’t know how to put it into a card. I love your simple layout, and I am going to copy it! Thanks so much for all the inspiration and the video!
Great ideas…thank you and for the video as well.

What great ideas and creative ways to stretch your supplies!
Thanks for such a good clear instructional video. I had just tidied up my stencils and realised I had not used them for a long time. I have sprays and inkpads so will give them a go. I also have a leafy die which will be similar to your embossed and die cut piece. So I now have another project. Thanks!
This was very helpful as didn’t really know that you could color the embossing paste with all those different mediums. Pretty results and loved the embossing on vellum. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
Wonderful video showing the results. Great look at the different mediums that can be used to add color to the paste.
