Messy Watercolor Background Card with May Sukyong Park

by May Sukyong Park

Altenew Watercolor Card May Park Blog1Hi, crafty friends! It's May here sharing a fun watercolor card featuring the Starry Flowers Stamp Set. I stepped out of my comfort zone and created a MESSY controlled background.

Altenew Watercolor Card May Park Blog6I started by stamping the floral images from the Starry Flowers Stamp Set along the border with embossing ink on an A2-sized watercolor paper.

Then I sprinkled some Pure White Embossing Powder over the stamped images and heat set the images with a heat tool.

Altenew Watercolor Card May Park Blog5Next, I created a messy watercolor background using a wet paintbrush and several watercolor-based inks over the entire panel while I was watercoloring each flower loosely.

Altenew Watercolor Card May Park Blog2After my watercolor panel was dry, I added some splatters using watercolor-based inks. Then I cut the panel into 4″ x 5.25″ and mounted it onto an A2-sized top folding white card base with 3M foam tape to give dimension.

Altenew Watercolor Card May Park Blog3I stamped the sentiment from the Rustic Linen Stamp Set on a piece of black cardstock with embossing ink and heat embossed it with Pure White Embossing Powder.

I then trimmed my sentiment into a thin strip and mounted my sentiment strip banner on the card front using 3M foam tape after adding some dash lines with a white gel pen.

Altenew Watercolor Card May Park Blog4To add some interest to my watercolor background, I added a bunch of small dots using Tonic Nuvo Crystal Drops. I ended up adding too many dots – I just couldn’t stop!

Altenew Watercolor Card May Park Blog7That's all for today. I hope my card inspired you to give a messy watercolor background a try.

Thank you so much for stopping by. Happy crafting!

So pretty and not at all “messy” to me. I like your description as “MESSY controlled”.

This is sooooo pretty! Love the colors you used to “messy” water color. And all the Nuvo Drops coordinate just beautifully.

Beautiful card! I love this messy watercolor look and the Starry Flowers stamp set. The splatter and Nuvo drops are nice details too. These colors look so great together – I think that’s why my messy watercolor pieces don’t turn out quite so well. I would love a video with some messy watercolor tips including color choice. Thanks for sharing your amazing talents.

Amazing card – so pretty yet looks easy to do. I’ve never seen a card with all over dots/drops and it is wonderful. It’s not easy to do this without looking like a hoarders house but you did it – really nice card!
