A Touch of Winter for January’s 2021 Inspiration Challenge

by nathalie

Happy New Year to you all!
Nathalie with you today to kick off the new year with a new & fun Inspiration Challenge. January here in Canada is usually one of our coldest and snowiest months of the year. We love snow; everything just seems to glisten and shine against the white canvas it creates. This is a picture I took a few years back after a snow/ice storm on one of our walks. Let's use this as inspiration for this month's challenge.

I love the colors of the background with lots of white and hints of magenta and black. Since I want to bring the snow to the focus of the card, I am switching the colors to the background, and making the Craft-A-Flower: Poppy Layering Die Set the focal point of the card.

Let's build a background.

I am using  a 4.5″ x 6.5″ piece of Yupo paper.  To bring the magenta and black accents from the picture, I used Artist Marker Refills in Pure Graphite Alcohol ink and Cosmic Berry Alcohol Ink. A bit of Alcohol Ink blending solution helps to move the ink around and create the cloud-like background. I set this aside to let the inks dry completely.

Our Focal Point

I am using the Craft-A-Flower: Poppy Layering Die Set to build the flowers from white and light gray cardstock. First, I am keeping the die-cuts plain and closest to white, thus evoking the feel of snow and winter to the card. Next, I am using soft tones of gray cardstock to bring definition and dimension to the die-cuts. Finally, I am using two flower die-cuts to help emphasize the snowy color of the picture.

Let's build the card.

First, I attach the inked panel to a Pale Gray cardstock panel (5″ x 7″).  Next, I use foam adhesive to attach the florals onto the panel; this creates dimension and movement on the card. Finally, I am adding a sentiment created with the Best Sentiments Stamp Set and Obsidian Pigment Ink.

Interesting takes on how to focus on winter. Being in New England don’t have to worry about that, though.

I love seeing your journal pages, and this card shows how multi-talented you are. This is really beautiful. It could have been too busy but the calming grey and white are perfect. That background is everything!

Love the background, love the flowers, but not together – too busy, end up not being able to focus on either. Thank you.

Such a stunning card – I love it! Are we able to use greens with the inspiration colours or not? So many of the Altenew stamps feature florals, I wondered if it was acceptable. If not, you’d better delete my entry!
