October 2022 Inspiration Challenge | Birthday Card with a Bold Background

Altenew October Inspiration Challenge

It's a new month, and that means it's time for the new October 2022 Inspiration Challenge! Jenny here, and I'm excited to host this month's challenge with this easy birthday card!

My photo was actually snapped at a farm I stayed at for a vacation near Lake Placid, New York, recently. It was a working sheep farm, but with lots of gorgeous blooms all around the farmhouse. These were captured early in the morning, just after a rain shower, when the sun came out. I love how the rain droplets are 'embellishing' the petals, as well as the rich green backdrop.

First and foremost, I wanted to capture that green color in the background of the inspiration photo and give it a leafy feel. I used a panel of green cardstock from my stash that matched the color palette and dry embossed it with the Enchanting Vines 3D Embossing Folder.

Watercoloring With Inks

I'm not too sure what the florals are in the picture, but I loved the gorgeous open, flowing petals. I used the recently released Build-A-Garden: Pristine Peonies – the double floral image really was perfect for this image. I heat embossed it in Rose Gold Crisp Embossing Powder onto watercolor paper.

I used Crisp Dye Inks to color my florals – using the pink and yellows of the graphic to inspire me. I used Butternut Crisp Dye Ink and Blush Crisp Dye Ink, smooshing the inks down onto a watercolor palette and picking up the color with a wet brush.

For the pale layer, I first wet the image itself, then dropped the ink in, letting the color wick out. When dry, I then added an additional layer of ink. To darken the shadows on the petals, I added a little Cotton Candy Crisp Dye Ink.

Add Depth and Hide Borders with Artist Markers

I wanted to add a little bit more depth for contrast on my florals, so added a few little touches here and there with Artist Markers, just in the corners. I used the lighter pink from the Sunshine Valley Set and one of the darker yellows from the Space Garden Set. I also added some darker colors to the flower centers.

I die cut out the flowers with the Build-A-Garden: Pristine Peonies Add-On Die Set, and then, to ‘hide' the white border, I used a green Artist Marker from the Sunshine Valley Set to carefully edge the border. I then popped it on top of my dry embossed panel with Instant Dimension Foam Tape.

I finished this easy birthday card with a sentiment from the One-Go Birthday Greetings Stamp and Die Set, heat embossed in Rose Gold, and scattered a few Satin Gold Sequins.

I hope you liked this easy birthday card with a bold background! Now it is your turn to create a project of your own inspired by this month's challenge image and get a chance to win prizes!

Hiya Jenny. This might be an easy card for you to do but boy it will be hard for me!
What a absolutely stunning card you have made. Changing the subject slightly here but, I always thought Lace Placid, New York was a made up place and I’m pleased it’s really not. I read about Lake Placid in lots of book, I suppose that’s why I thought it wasn’t real is it an actual Lake?
Thank you for sharing your amazing talent with us all X X

I always wonder if 1. You have to have a blog specifically or if you can just have social media and YouTube etc. And more importantly 2. If altenew is ever interested in creators who use cardmarking products (i.e. Stamps, stencils, inks etc.) for amazing creations that aren’t cards, for example planners and journals etc, or household decor etc.? I think there’s a definite gap in the market for that special use of these gorgeous products. Also, it’s a little silly for anyone to need to spend almost the entire $30 for one single set of anything from altenew (don’t get me wrong, love love love the products and they’re absolutely probably the nicest quality as well as most gorgeous in design products out there) but to put your hard earned money into maybe one or two items from altenew with that $30 cost (which is not easy for everyone) to make their products the main focal point, with only the chance at a $30 gift card is a bit anticlimactic. Of course being a guest on the blog hop is a dream, but I do wish there were more opportunities for crafters with talent but less investment money to spend on products to really try different brands and products and really show their talents. I’d love to win or see an offer to artists with a desirable amount of products (not just a gift card that maybe covers one stamp set, two if ones on sale) hehe. Not sending any hate at all, you guys do what works for you! I’d just love to see it and would love to really get to experience what your company has to offer and the quality and joy your products could provide. ❤️

Wow, you created a beautiful card. I love creating and you have provided the inspiration. I don’t have a blog (yet) but I do have Pinterest, Facebook, and a new Instagram account I have yet to fill / use. Would any of those be fine? I love the Altenew products – it is a wonderful collection I’m working to build, one small order at a time. I have yet to enter but I know, when I do, it will be so fun and I hope I can rise to the challenge. Thank you for having this opportunity and creating fun challenges for all creative thinkers! Much love and lots of hugs!

I’ve looked at this photo so many times and just noticed the bug below the flower – on the leaf. The bug is green so it’s easy to miss.
I can wait to start this project. 😊
