Hello there, Michelle Short here with Terrific Tags with Michelle.
Today, I have a tag to share with you using embossing in two ways – dry embossing with an embossing folder and then enhancing it with embossing powder.
This is a really fun technique that gives a gilded look. Although I am creating a DIY tag today, this technique also works perfectly on handmade cards and other projects. You could even add the tag to a card or scrapbook page!

Dry Embossing
I started off by die-cutting two tags from black cardstock with the Terrific Tags Dies.
For the first DIY tag, I added it inside of the Silk Art 3D Embossing Folder from the Craft Your Life Project Kit: Silk Art and ran it through my die-cutting machine. This looks really pretty on its own, but I want to enhance it further.
PRO TIP! You can mist the cardstock first with water to prevent the cardstock from cracking.
I took a foam ink blending tool and added Persian Blue Pigment Ink to the raised areas. I blended it a bit first and then pounced it afterward.
Since the ink is pigment in its property, it will sit on top of the cardstock and you can see it over the dark black cardstock.
I wanted it to be a little lighter, so I also added on some Caribbean Sky Pigment Ink before heat setting it slightly, so that the powder didn't stick to it completely.
This really brings out the embossing, especially on a dark background. You can see this technique used here too, where I layered up different pigment inks to enhance dry embossing.

Enhancing with Embossing Powder
I then thought it would be nice to add some embossing powder on top for a gilded look.
Using a Detailed Blending Brush, I added Embossing Ink in some of the raised areas. I didn't want them to be completely covered but have a mottled/gilded look. I applied Rose Gold Crisp Embossing Powder and then, using a dry paintbrush, removed some of the excess powder before heat setting it.
It really glistens in the light and looks so pretty in real life!
I used just one color of powder today but you could mix them on the project and that would look really pretty too!

Finishing Touches
To finish off the DIY tag, I added another tag to the back – this gives me somewhere to write a personal message if I want to. I then took the sentiment from the stamp set in the Craft Your Life Project Kit: Silk Art and stamped it onto more black cardstock with Embossing Ink. I applied more Rose Gold Crisp Embossing Powder and heat set.
It was cut into a strip and added to the tag with Instant Dimension Foam Tape. TIP! Before adding the foam tape, I painted the edges with a black marker pen to remove the white. I then embellished with some Copper Jewels from my stash and added twine through the top and tied in a bow.
I hope this has inspired you to use dry embossing in different ways. You can watch the full process video below, or on YouTube.
