A Few Ways With Stencils

by Lydia Evans

Hello everyone!

Today, I thought it would be nice to share a few different techniques and ideas using our collection of Stencils. Before I get into the different techniques I thought it would be a good idea to share a video containing the basics.

You can watch the video below or on our YouTube Channel:

Here at Altenew we have a beautiful array of stencils, including layering stencils and builder stencils. We believe that stencils are such a versatile tool and we hope to give you a few ideas using them in the next video, you can watch below or over on our YouTube Channel:

So for a run thorough on the techniques covered in the video:

Layering/Scene Building: By moving, flipping or rotating the stencil you can create different effects or layers. We have specially created Layering and Builder Stencils that will help you create stunning effects, although you can use non-layering stencils in the same way to create many looks.

Selective Inking: Use small blending tools or finger daubers to add various colors to different places of the design to create a colorful look.

Using Markers: You can also use markers, pens or even pencils through the stencil to add small amounts of color to small or larger spaces. You could also ink blend over all of the stencil, remove it and then add details or doodling with a fine line pen.

Ink Sprays: Our Ink Sprays and Stencils are a perfect match! You can create beautiful bold or super soft quick and easy backgrounds by just spraying lightly over the stencil with one or a number of our metallic ink sprays.

Emboss Resist: This is such an easy technique that gives a beautiful soft or bold look depending on your color choices. Simply lay down a stencil over a cardstock panel and add Embossing Ink over, remove stencil and heat emboss using clear embossing powder. Once cool add ink blending over the top to magically reveal the design.

Stamping Through Stencils: You can create amazing mixed media techniques to even clean and simple projects. Lay stencil over the top of project and stamp though the stencil with any stamp you wish, playing around with various designs and colors will give you a multitude of different looks.

Embossing Paste: So this is not a new technique, it may be an oldie but it's still a goody. You can even color embossing paste using our Ink Sprays, to mix things up a little you could even add color to the embossing paste when is already on your project. You could even play around with a few colors to create marbling effects.

Dry Embossing: I just love the subtle look of dry embossing stencils through due cutting machines, it's so classy and elegant. To make the design pop a little more you can always add over a light blending of ink, this will add extra depth to the edges of the embossing and make the design look even more dimensional.

That is about it for today!

I hope this post has been helpful and has inspired you to get your Stencils out and use them in different ways! We would love to know if this post has sparked your creativity so please let us know in the comments section.
